Earth Charter Australia Network - 1st Feb, 04
Posted By: Alison Steel

Message from Brendan Mackey....

For the last few years, The Nature and Society Forum (Inc) - a Canberra based national NGO - has been serving as the host organisation for the Earth Charter network in Australia, and I have been acting as national contact person and secretariat. I am very happy to acknowledge NatSoc's generous support over this period. They remain the living embodiment of Earth Charter values and principles. However, I am pleased to announce that the baton has now been handed on!

The Queensland Earth Charter Committee (Inc) has kindly agreed to host the national secretariat functions and national contact person position. The QECC members did a great job organising the Brisbane conference and have also excelled in developing and managing the new web site (
http://www.earthcharter.org.au/). As they are an incorporated (not for profit of members) NGO, their current chair, Suzanne Davies, has accepted the mantle of national contact person.

I will be continuing my Earth Charter work with the international secretariat. A key goal for 2004 is to seek the endorsement of the Earth Charter by the IUCN at the World Conservation Congress in Bangkok later this year. Of course, I am always happy to speak at events and gatherings in Australia about the Earth Charter initiative and help in any other way I can.

One more thing, at a planning meeting in Brisbane last week, we decided to have a page on the web site where the names of key people and organisations can be placed who have endorsed the Earth Charter and who are prepared to have their name publicly associated with the Charter. I would be grateful if you could give this matter some thought, and If you can think of any appropriate people or organisations to please contact Suzanne (
info@earthcharter.org.au).

Ipswich Film Night - 1st Oct, 03
Posted By: Alison Steel

Ipswich Envirocare and the QLD Earth Charter Committee recently held joint film screening of " A Quiet Revolution". It was the inaugural film night of what Ipswich Envirocare plans will be a monthly event. The 30 minute documentary stresses the interconnectness of all people and includes interviews with individuals who have initiated grassroots movements in India, Slovakia and Kenya. A lively and enjoyable discussion followed the film. Different films will be shown on the first Wednesday of each month at the Barry Jones Auditorium, Ipswich Library.  For further information about Ipswich Envirocare. Please contact ecare@dnet.net.au or phone Phil Kyson, President of Envirocare, Ph 3281 2934 or "A Quiet Revolution" please contact QLD Earth Charter Committee at info@earthcharter.org.au
